Approximately 190 commercial wind turbines in operation.

There is a strong interest in commercial solar photovoltaic energy development. Approximately 14 ground-mounted solar farms already permitted in the county, as yet, none are constructed. The total capacity will be 117MW.

In terms of energy from hydro installations, there are three grid connected run- of river hydro power stations on the River Suir. These are located at Holycross, Cahir and Clogheen and these have a combined installed capacity of 0.43MW of power per annum.

In 2015, with the support of the Tipperary Energy Agency, Tipperary Co Co decided to build on ongoing energy initiatives in line with its Covenant of Mayors commitments, through the preparation of a new county-wide Renewable Energy Strategy (the Strategy).

The Strategy was developed on a collaborative basis with all relevant stakeholders and sets out a proactive framework for the development of renewable energy in Tipperary. In 2018, the Council received the Presidents’ Award from the Irish Planning Institute for its innovative and proactive approach to the development of the Strategy.
